Importance of Uncertainties in the Spatial Distribution of Preindustrial Wildfires for Estimating Aerosol Radiative Forcing

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Uncertainty in preindustrial aerosol emissions, including fires, is one of the largest sources uncertainty estimating anthropogenic radiative forcing. Here, we quantify range forcing associated with location and magnitude fire emissions a climate model based on four emission estimates. With varied among estimates, find change from present‐day to between −0.4 0.3 W/m 2 for direct −1.8 0.6 cloud albedo Altering only spatial distribution fires fixed adds previously unaccounted 25% total range. Future studies must account other as regional differences contribute substantial additional estimates resultant sensitivity.

Aerosol absorption and radiative forcing

We present a comprehensive examination of aerosol absorption with a focus on evaluating the sensitivity of the global distribution of aerosol absorption to key uncertainties in the process representation. For this purpose we extended the comprehensive aerosol-climate model ECHAM5HAM by effective medium approximations for the calculation of aerosol effective refractive indices, updated black car...

Direct radiative forcing of anthropogenic organic aerosol

[1] This study simulates the direct radiative forcing of organic aerosol using the GFDL AM2 GCM. The aerosol climatology is provided by the MOZART chemical transport model (CTM). The approach to calculating aerosol optical properties explicitly considers relative humidity–dependent hygroscopic growth by employing a functional group– based thermodynamic model, and makes use of the size distribut...
